Creatine for Teen Athletes: What Age Is It Safe to Start?

Creatine was first introduced to me when I was about 15.


I was at boarding school in the UK, and that was when all of us started hitting the gym almost every day with one goal: build muscle.


We didn't actually start with creatine on its own. We discovered it through protein shakes.


I still remember the product: MaxiNutrition Cyclone Strength. It had whey protein plus 5g of creatine monohydrate.


A bunch of 15-year-old boys saw “Strength” on the tub and obviously thought:

We need this.


So we took it after training every day.


Looking back, none of us asked what I'd ask a young athlete today:


What does creatine actually do? Is it safe at 15? And do I even need it?


Fast-forward to today and creatine has become much more than the muscle-building supplement I knew as a teenager.


It's now one of the most researched sports supplements in the world, with growing research into areas such as cognition, brain energy and women's health.


So, if creatine potentially has all these benefits:


At what age should a young athlete actually start taking it?


What Does Creatine Actually Do?


Creatine isn't a steroid, hormone or stimulant.


It's a compound our bodies already produce, and we also get it naturally from foods such as meat and fish.


Most creatine is stored in our muscles, where it helps regenerate ATP — essentially the body's rapid energy supply.


Think:

Sprinting. Jumping. Lifting. Explosive movements. Repeated high-intensity efforts.


That's why creatine is useful to athletes.


Supplementation can increase muscular creatine stores and improve our ability to perform repeated high-intensity exercise.


And despite all the fancy versions sold today, the form with the strongest evidence is still:

Creatine monohydrate.


Creatine Isn't Just About Muscle


This is where things have become interesting.


Our brains require huge amounts of energy too, and the creatine system also plays a role in brain energy metabolism.


A 2024 meta-analysis found potential benefits for memory, attention and processing speed, although the evidence isn't strong enough to say creatine simply makes everyone smarter.


Research into women has also expanded, looking at potential effects on strength, body composition, cognition and healthy ageing.


So creatine shouldn't really be viewed as just a “bodybuilding supplement for men” anymore.


But that still doesn't mean every teenager should take it.


Is Creatine Safe for Teenagers?


Here's where the answer becomes less exciting:


We don't fully know.


Creatine has an enormous amount of research supporting its use in healthy adults.


Research involving healthy teenagers is much smaller.


A 2023 review found only 13 eligible studies involving 268 children and adolescents, and importantly, those studies weren't designed specifically to establish long-term safety.


More recent reviews are reassuring: studies haven't consistently identified major short-term kidney, liver or cardiometabolic safety problems.


But we still don't have the depth of long-term research that exists in adults.


So I wouldn't tell a parent:


“Creatine is completely safe for every teenager.”


But saying:


“Creatine is dangerous for everyone under 18”


isn't supported by the evidence either.


The reality sits somewhere in between.


So What Age Should You Start?


This is probably why you clicked on this article.


Unfortunately, there isn't a magic number.


There's no strong evidence showing creatine is dangerous at 15 but suddenly becomes safe when you turn 16 or 18.


I think there's a better question:


Is this athlete actually ready for creatine?


If I have a teenager asking me about supplements, I first want to know how they're eating, sleeping and training.


Because those things matter far more.


Get These Right Before Creatine


Imagine you're 15.


You train five times per week but sleep six hours, skip breakfast and barely eat lunch.


Taking creatine isn't your biggest problem.


I'd fix the system first.


1. Eat enough

Teen athletes need energy for more than training.

You're simultaneously trying to grow, develop, study, train, compete and recover.

Under-fuelling all of that while worrying about supplements makes little sense.


2. Get enough protein AND carbohydrates

Protein supports growth and repair.

But don't become so obsessed with protein that you forget carbohydrates. They are an important fuel source for high-intensity sport and training.


3. Sleep

You can buy every supplement in the world.

None of them replaces consistently getting enough sleep.


4. Train properly

Good technique. Progressive overload. Consistency.

Creatine can't fix bad programming.


5. Recover

Your body improves between sessions, not just during them.


6. Then think about supplements

My hierarchy is simple:

Food → Sleep → Training → Recovery → Supplements.

Creatine comes near the end, not the beginning.


When Would I Consider Creatine for a Teen Athlete?


Personally, I'd want several things in place first.


The athlete should already be training seriously and consistently. Their nutrition and sleep should be reasonably good. They should understand why they're taking creatine rather than copying their friends or TikTok.


Parents should also be involved.


And if creatine is being considered, I'd stick to creatine monohydrate from a reputable, preferably independently tested product.


For teenagers with medical conditions or taking medication, I'd involve an appropriately qualified healthcare or sports-nutrition professional.


That's very different from secretly ordering whatever supplement an influencer recommends.


If You Do Take Creatine, Keep It Simple


The supplement industry loves making simple things complicated.


Creatine doesn't need to be complicated.


Creatine monohydrate has the strongest evidence.


A loading phase isn't essential.


Taking more doesn't automatically mean better results.


And some initial weight gain can occur because creatine increases water stored within muscle — that doesn't mean you've suddenly gained body fat.


Also remember:


Creatine isn't protein.


Protein provides amino acids used for growth and repair. Creatine supports rapid energy availability.


Different jobs.


What I'd Tell My 15-Year-Old Self


If I could go back to that boarding-school gym and speak to myself holding that Cyclone shake, I wouldn't say:


“Don't take creatine.”


I'd say:


“Understand why you're taking it.”


Because looking back, the biggest factors determining my progress weren't inside that tub.


They were how I trained, how much I ate, how well I slept and whether I stayed consistent.


Creatine may help optimise those things.


But creatine isn't the thing.


It took me years of training and coaching to properly understand that distinction.


So, What Age Is Creatine Safe to Start?


There isn't enough evidence to give every teenager one universal starting age.


Creatine monohydrate has an excellent research base in healthy adults. The research in teenagers is smaller but, so far, hasn't produced consistent major short-term safety concerns.


That's why I wouldn't make the decision purely based on whether someone is 14, 15, 16 or 17.


I'd look at the athlete.


Are you training properly?Eating enough?Sleeping enough?Recovering?Do you actually understand why you want creatine?


If not, forget the supplement for now.


Fix those first.


And if those foundations are already strong, creatine may be something worth discussing responsibly with your parents and an appropriately qualified professional.

The principle I follow today is simple:


Supplements should optimise a strong system — not compensate for a broken one.
